Getting started

What to expect at your first pelvic floor PT appointment

If you've never been to pelvic floor physical therapy, the not-knowing is often the hardest part. So here's exactly what happens at a first visit at She PT — including the things that don't happen unless you want them to.

It starts with a conversation, not an exam

Your first appointment begins with you talking and us listening. You'll have space to share your story, your symptoms, your history, and your goals, without feeling rushed. This is the most important part of the whole visit — it's how we understand what's actually going on and what matters to you.

A whole-body evaluation

From there, your therapist assesses more than just the area where you feel symptoms. We look at your posture, your breathing, your core, your hips — because the pelvic floor doesn't work in isolation, and the cause of a problem often sits somewhere you wouldn't expect.

For some conditions, a thorough evaluation can include an internal assessment of the pelvic floor muscles. We want to be completely clear: this is never assumed, never rushed, and never required. If it's relevant to your care, your therapist explains exactly what it involves and why, beforehand — and it only happens with your clear consent, on your timeline. If you're not ready at your first visit, that's completely normal, and there is still a great deal we can do. You are always in control.

You'll leave with a plan and usually some relief

Treatment typically begins the same day — you won't just leave with homework. And you'll go home with a clear, written action plan, so you're never wondering what to do between visits.

Practical details

Wear comfortable, flexible clothing, like you would to a workout. Visits are a full hour, one-on-one with your therapist, in a private treatment room — not a shared gym floor. And we're a family-friendly clinic, so if you need to bring your baby, that's always welcome.

The bottom line

A first pelvic floor PT visit is mostly conversation, a careful evaluation, and a plan — all at your pace. As one patient who described herself as very private told us, the staff are kind and patient, and nothing happens that you're not comfortable with.
